COMMANDER THIBODEAU'S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

Fellow Sons, AMVETS Family, and Friends,
Some have suggested Washington Irving felt that Christmas should be a peaceful and warm-hearted holiday bringing groups together across lines of wealth, social status, and nationality.
On December 7, 1914, during World War I, Pope Benedict XV recommended a temporary hiatus of the war for the celebration of Christmas. The warring countries refused to create any official cease-fire. These servicemen on the Western Front did not expect to celebrate on the battlefield. On Christmas the soldiers in the trenches declared their own unofficial truce. As destiny unfolded it was apparent in that combat zone that even a world war could not destroy the Christmas spirit. The season message of Peace to and for mankind resonates as strong today as it did over 100 hundred years ago on a bleak and cold terrain.
Scripture says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down for the Father of Lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
On behalf of National Sons of AMVETS I would extend to everyone a Merry Christmas! As you celebrate in peace with family and friends, may the Spirit of the Divine Birth fill your hearts and homes. I ask that you also pause, reflect, and pray for our Veterans, those currently on active duty, and their families. Their sacrifice and service maintain the gift of liberty and freedom for every American.
