Good morning AMVETS (& AMVETS FAMILY) members,
As you know, we have been working with Congress to create legislation that would solve our organization's tax issues. The Charitable Equity for Veterans Act of 2019 was the solution we came up with to allow local AMVETS posts to accept tax-deductible charitable donations. The bill was introduced this year by Representative Rob Kind and Representative Brad Wenstrup, and we need to increase the number of co-sponsors in order to get this bill passed.
If you think your local post would benefit from receiving tax-deductible charitable donations, ask your Representative to support H.R. 1715.
A few talking points you can use:
There is a decades-old and antiquated regulation in tax code 501 (c)(19) that is hurting our local post
This regulation requires our organization to maintain a membership of at least 90% wartime veterans to accept tax-deductible donations, but AMVETS is open to all non-wartime veterans
This legislation helps us by addressing the unintended consequence in the tax code by allowing any congressionally chartered 501 (c)(19) to be eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable donations
Please call your Representative's office as soon as you can. You can find their phone number by searching Google or call 202-224-3121, tell them your Representative's name, and they will direct you to their office. If you think your Representative is already sponsoring this bill, you can check HERE. If you have any questions about these calls please email Madison Lamp from our legislative team <Madison@thenimitzgroup.com> and she will be able to assist you.
