Coordinator Legislative Director Deputy Legislative Director Communications Director Jr. AMVETS Coordinator Inspector General Events Director Webmaster Chaplin | Dave Niederhauser of Waterloo, Iowa, was elected National Sons of AMVETS Commander on August 22 at the Sons of AMVETS National Convention in Orlando, Florida. Dave is a life member and active participant of Sons of AMVETS Squadron #49 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Commander Niederhauser married his wife, Janice, in 1979, and they have five children and eight grandchildren. He has been active with the Sons of AMVETS since joining, beginning his leadership service as Historian and later advancing to Commander. He began with the Department of Iowa as Adjutant and served in several roles, including Department of Iowa Commander from 2022 to 2024. He currently serves as Department 1st Vice Commander. He began serving at the national level in 2018 as a delegate for the State of Iowa. In 2022, he was elected Provost Marshal and advanced through the offices of 3rd Vice, 2nd Vice, and 1st Vice before being elected National Commander. Commander Niederhauser’s military lineage dates back to the Revolutionary War. His uncles served in the Army and Navy during the Cold War, and his father, Richard, served in the Iowa Army National Guard as a mortar squad leader with the 168th Infantry. His step-grandfather served during World War II as a gunner on a B-26 bomber in the European Theater. His son, Christopher, served in the Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom for 18 months as a member of the 34th Division, 1-133rd Infantry. His ancestry traces back to Ruben Tuller of Connecticut, a volunteer with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He and Janice volunteered with the Iowa National Guard Family Programs for 19 years, including service during three deployments. Throughout their years of service, they received several awards from the Army, the Iowa National Guard, and the AMVETS Family. David graduated from Hawkeye Technical College with a degree in electronics. He worked in the electrical field for 14 years before beginning a 27-year career with the United States Postal Service, retiring in 2020. He is now retired and continues to serve veterans.
