Commander Owen Jackson and the National Sons of AMVETS (American Veterans) are raising funds to renovate the AMVETS Family Service Center.  This 35,000 square foot facility will provide housing and important services for veterans and their families experiencing homeless.

Owen Jackson of Athens Ohio was elected to National Sons of AMVETS Commander on August 10^th at the Sons of AMVETS National Convention in Springfield, Illinois.  Owen is a life member of Sons of AMVETS Squadron 76 in Athens, Ohio. where he continues to be active.

Veterans Day started as Armistice Day, November 11th, because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. In 1954, this important day was changed to "Veterans Day" to celebrate and honor all Veterans who honorably served our great nation.

As we came together yesterday to mark the remembrance of the terrorist actions that occurred on our soil 20 years ago, we remembered the 2,977 lives lost and the more than 6,000 others that were injured. Everyone remembers where they were on that fateful day, the same as the generations that came before us remembered Pearl Harbor.

The 36th National Sons of AMVETS Convention in Greensboro, North Carolina, considering the circumstances, was a unique experience with everyone stepping up to the plate to make it a success. It is a great honor to be elected Sons of AMVETS National Commander and to be humbled with the support of my fellow Sons and AMVETS family.

The Sons of AMVETS 36th National Convention in Greensboro, North Carolina was a tremendous success.  Congratulations to Commander-Elect Paul R. Speigle from Squadron 45 in Salem, Ohio. The entire leadership team for 2021 – 2022 is listed below.

Florida Sons of AMVETS continue DIRECT-to-VET assistance through their Veteran Mobility Assistance Program (VMAP). This recent presentation was spearheaded through Sons of AMVETS Squadron 113 in Bunnell Florida.

Since 1998, the highly regarded National Sons of AMVETS have STORMED THE HILL and carried the AMVETS Legislative Priorities to each member of Congress in support of legislation that promotes and provides positive benefits to our nation’s Veterans.

My fellow Sons, Today, Wednesday, April 15, AMVETS National Headquarters issued a memorandum to their Departments regarding Department Conventions. This memorandum comes in the wake of the National Department of the American Legion preemptively canceling their 2020 National Convention and gives some guidance regarding the holding of State Department Conventions.

Fellow Sons, “Stay at Home” directives combined with Post closings has impacted and isolated many Veterans and AMVETS family members. Limited social contact can lead to loneliness, low self-esteem, and fear of the unknown. Experts agree that social interaction is vital to maintain physical and mental health. Government, along with the media, seems to advocate passive behavior.

I am sure by now you are all as sick as I am over the Coronavirus and the phrase “out of an abundance of caution”.  That being said, many states have shut down all food service and drinking establishments and with them most of the Posts.

The Sons of AMVETS Squadron 1-ME, an integral part of the AMVETS family of Post 1 in Biddeford, is organizing a golf tournament and is seeking hole sponsorships at a cost of $50.00 per hole. All sponsors will have a sign set up at a hole or holes for all to see.
The Golf tournament will be held on Sunday August 30, 2020 at the Dutch elm Golf Course in Arundel Maine.

The “Pine Tree” State, AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 1 & Sons of AMVETS Squadron 1 will be hosting a TESTIMONIAL DINNER to proudly honor the Sons of AMVETS National Commander of 2019-2020, Richard H. Thibodeau.

Vietnam Veteran John Hawkins served as Commander of AMVETS Post 274 in Carlisle, PA in 2017-2018. In May 2019, Commander John suffered a stroke. Presently he resides in the Middleton Home in Middleton, PA.

The Sons of AMVETS in the “Pine Tree” state combined resources donated to Commander Eric Rodzen’s Project with funds from Past National Commander Ken Barber’s Project, Mission: Veterans Mobility, to provide DIRECT TO VET assistance to Rod Anderson. Rod is a Vietnam War Veteran and active AMVETS family member at his Post and in the Department.  

To all Sons of AMVETS nationwide: Although we were unable to "Storm the Hill" in 2021, we need to stay active and remind our legislators that common sense benefits for Veterans must remain a major focus.

Mission: Veterans Mobility is ready to implement distribution of scooters.

This program was designed to provide mobility assistance to our Veterans who cannot attain such assistance through the usual medical systems, VA Hospitals, Local Hospitals and other medical avenues.

Veterans Day is special for Sons of AMVETS – Department of Ohio. For over 20 years, Ohio Sons have hosted a 4 day/3 night excursion to Washington DC making it possible for veterans, AMVETS family members, and friends to participate in services at Arlington National Cemetery. This year’s event, led by Sons Department of Ohio Commander Vern Davenport, was nothing short of OUTSTANDING!!

It is with deep sadness to inform every one of the passing of Nancy Kemp, wife of AMVETS PNC Ed Kemp, mother-in-law of AMVETS National Riders President George Cummings, and grandmother of National Juniors President Courtney Cummings.

On this 4th of July, as we enjoy our picnics and parades, I wanted to share portions of a message that was sent to service men and women in 2002 by then Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld.

It is with deep sorrow to inform every one of the recent passing of National Snappiest Sue Dick.

On behalf of the Sons of AMVETS nationwide, I would like to extend our most sincere condolences to Sue’s family and friends. Sue was an outstanding AMVETS family member and will be missed.

May she forever rest in the presence of the Lord.

Timothy J. "Tim " Tuttle

February 19, 1945 - March 23, 2018

MUNCIE- Timothy “Tim” J. Tuttle, 73, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018 at I.U. Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

He was born on February 19, 1945 in Muncie, the son of Willard and Margaret (Boden) Tuttle.

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of AMVETS family member Tim Tuttle from Indiana Post 12. Tim was a US Army Veteran who served in Korea. He continued to serve his country by being an active AMVETS member and held many leadership positions.

Another successful trip to Washington DC to STORM the HILL. Led by Sons of AMVETS National Commander Harold Collins our contingent carried and delivered the AMVETS legislative priorities to EVERY Representative and Senator in Congress.

We would like to share the following information regarding visitation and services for PNC Valley.

Visitation will be at the Lasater Funeral Home located at 11337 Upper Gilchrist Rd, Mt. Vernon, OH from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday February 18, 2018. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 AM.

It is with great sadness that we share with everyone the loss of Sons of AMVETS PNC Rene Valley who passed away on Tuesday February 13, 2018.

​Our thoughts and prayers are extended to his wife Barb and the entire Valley family during this most dificult time.

On December 11 members of Sons of AMVETS Squadron 48 gathered at Post 48 to wrap toys that would be donated to the children of Air National Guard Members serving at the Air National Guard Rescue Wing based at Frances Gabreski Airport located in Westhampton Beach, NY.

I would like to extend my best wishes to everyone who is celebrating Christmas.

As AMVETS PNC S John Sisler was such a strong advocate of National Sons of AMVETS, we would like to share a bit of history about Commander Sisler and comments provided by National Sons of AMVETS PNC Charlie Summerall, whose National Commander tenure coincided with Commander Sisler, and AMVETS National Executive Director Joe Chenelly.

Presidential Proclamations are a long-standing tradition for our great nation at Thanksgiving. These declarations acknowledge the blessings we have received but also remind us of our duties to our God, our family, our communities and our country.

It is with a heavy heart that I again ask the AMVETS family and our friends to join with all Sons of AMVETS nationwide to pray for those souls lost, their families, and the many individuals impacted in Sutherland Springs, Texas. We humbly ask our Creator to provide the grace and strength to cope with this senseless act of evil against our fellow citizens.

The AMVETS Department of Florida Service Foundation continued their support of the Sons Scooter Program with a grant of $5,000.00. This DIRECT to VET program provides scooters to Veterans to improve their mobility and enhance their quality of life.

ALL Squadrons, Department Commanders, 1st Vice Commanders, & Fellow Sons,

A number of Posters aimed at advertising the Sons of AMVETS and helping at all levels to pull in renewals and help with New Membership drives are now available. I would ask that you take a look at these and utilize them as necessary; they may be of help to you if placed in a prominent place.

Today, the 22,000 + Sons of AMVETS nationwide join all Americans in prayer for those impacted by the tragedy in Las Vegas. Although we can never grasp the full measure of your loss we humbly ask God to provide you the strength during this most difficult time. To those who are hospitalized we pray for your speedy recovery.

National Sons of AMVETS Commander Harold Collins was off and running in the first few weeks of his tenure. The initial travel stop was at AMVETS Post 12 in Muncie, IN to attend Flag Retirement ceremonies to honor “Old Glory”. It was also a time to get some tips from Past National Commanders Robert Hammett, John Barnhill, Don Finnegan, and David Strittmather.

On Wednesday August 16th, 2017 the Sons of AMVETS  Department of Florida presented a scooter to WWII Veteran and Coldwater, MI  resident Tom Stemaly. Mr. Stemaly has ambulatory difficulties. It is hoped that the gift of a scooter will increase his mobility and thus improve his quality of life, allowing him to enjoy the freedoms he so valiantly fought for.

Elections are over! Results are in! CONGRATULATIONS to the elected officers for 2017-2018!!!!!

The Department of Florida Sons continue their DIRECT TO VET activity by sponsoring a mid-year cook-out for the vets at the James A. Haley Community Living Center in Tampa, FL. Burgers & Dogs were a well received change of pace from the normal menu and everyone had a great time.

On this Memorial Day 2017,  I am reminded of the words from President John F. Kennedy: "Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty."

On Saturday, 13 May, the Sons of AMVETS Department of Florida visited Quantum Leap Horse Farm for the third time this year; sponsoring and helping with “Veterans’ Family Appreciation Day”.  The veterans and their families were all from MacDill Air Force Base Tampa, and covered all five branches of the service.

On behalf of the Sons of AMVETS nationwide I would like to extend greetings to all in the AMVETS family, our friends, and veterans who are observing Easter.

In Paris Tennessee at the Sgt. Michael H. Ferschke Jr. AMVETS Post 22 of Blount County, Post Commander Mark Frederick administered the oath of office to the members of the newly formed Sons of AMVETS Squadron 22-TN.  Congratulations to each member of Squadron 22 who has now become united with over 22,000 Sons nationwide to continue the mission of “Sons Serving Veterans”.

Sons of AMVETS Department of Florida continues their DIRECT to VET activities by presenting another scooter to Korean era veteran Mr. Jack Messmore. Mr. Messmore is one of 30 veterans this year that has benefitted from this statewide program to increase mobility options and enhance the quality of life of our vets.

My Commander’s Project will be in support of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). They are the leading organization advocating for the 1.6 million Americans suffering from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD).

Many Squadrons across the country have taken advantage of P.N.C. Daniel K. Briggs’ Commander’s Project. The Arts and Craft Kit program is a DIRECT TO VET effort to provide free therapeutic craft kits. The kits have helped traumatized vets improve their motor skills, while also developing better feelings of self-esteem and self-worth.

On behalf of the Sons of AMVETS nationwide, I would like to extend to all a heartfelt and prosperous New Year!

As we approach Christmas 2016 I am reminded that the meaning of this day is held in our hearts and shared with family and friends. On behalf of the over 22,000 Sons of AMVETS nationwide I would like to extend Merry Christmas to everyone in the AMVETS family and all our friends.

Thanksgiving is the time for all to pause from their normal daily activities and express to our Creator our most humble appreciation for the bounty that we as Americans enjoy. On behalf of the Sons of AMVETS nationwide I would like to wish everyone in the AMVETS family and our friends a Happy Thanksgiving.

Ronald Reagan may have encapsulated Veterans Day best with this statement: “We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty, though it never was.

National Sons of AMVETS Commander Mark Serpis along with AMVETS Auxiliary National President Evelyn McElvin joined Nationl AMVETS Commander Harold Chapman on the Commander's annual visit to Hawaii.

It is with deep sorrow to inform the membership of the death of Past National Commander Stanley Mellott. On behalf of my fellow officers and comrades nationwide our most heartfelt condolences go out to wife Charlene, son Jesse, brothers, Richard Mellott, Ray Slavin, and the entire Mellott family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.

As September rolls in, so does Mark Serpis as National Commander for the Sons of AMVETS.

It was an honor to be elected as National Commander of Sons of AMVETS 2016-2017. I look forward with great anticipation of working with my fellow officers and comrades nationwide to further the Aims and Purpose of our organization. We will continue our commitment to the AMVETS family, our communities, and country.

More than 2 feet of rain has led to record flooding in Louisiana, submerging homes, businesses, and vehicles underwater. AMVETS Post 68 in Springfield, LA is the focal point for residents of Livingston Parish to go for benefits from the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services' Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

The efforts of the membership nationwide was nothing short of SENSATIONAL. Spearheaded by Commander Strittmather we collectively submitted $8,528,384 in Project Reports for 2015-2016. This was a record setting year and each Squadron member should be proud of their efforts as we continued to live our mission of "Sons Serving Veterans".

Today, I would like to extend a Happy 4th of July to each member of the AMVETS family and our friends. As we celebrate the birth of our country I am reminded of the American’s Creed authored by William Tyler Page in 1917 and adopted by Congress April 3, 1918.

The words in the famous Kohima Epitaph state very succinctly what it is that each veteran gave to his/her fellow citizens. "When you go home, Tell them of us and say, For their tomorrow, We gave our today"

The reporting year has come to a close and on behalf of the Veterans you serve, THANK YOU!!! With the collective effort of every Son, Squadron, and Department 2015-2016 was our best year ever serving our Veterans, communities, and country.

National Sons of AMVETS Commander David T. Strittmather’s strong campaign to bring awareness to the suicide rate of our veterans is motivating others to join the effort. This includes the Commander’s daughters Ciara and Shea.

Sons of AMVETS, Squadron 1 from Cuba, NY have supplied more than $6,700 worth of craft kits to the Veterans at the VA Medical Center in Bath, NY.  288 kits of leather goods, wood kits, and painting kits were supplied partially through a grant from Past National Sons of AMVETS Commander Daniel Briggs' Arts and Crafts Project.

On March 26, 2016 National Commander David T. Strittmather did 22 push-ups in his basement to kick-off “22 Push-Ups a Day for 22 Days”. This effort is to bring awareness to the suicide rate among Veterans and those currently serving.

On 11/23 the New York State Sons of AMVETS presented Canine Companions for Independence with a $1,000.00 donation to assist in providing food and veterinary care for future assistance dogs that will be placed with a Veteran with a disability. This is also the 2015-2016 Sons Commander's Project for New York State Sons of AMVETS Commander Patrick Mitchell.

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) reports that nearly one in four men and women (24 percent) who served their country have diabetes.This includes my father and why I have selected AMVETS Diabetes Institute as my Commander's Project.

To all Sons of AMVETS nationwide: Single page Fact Sheets on the 2017 AMVETS Legislative Priorities regarding Complimentary & Alternative Medicine, Toxic Wounds, Service Dogs, and Mental Health have been added to the wewbsite. ​As time permits, please review prior to "Storm the Hill"​. Additional information will be available during our orientation meeting on Tuesday March 7th.

By mid April, we will finally be able to get National Sons of AMVETS Commander to pause after over 8 months of leading our mission of "Sons Serving Veterans". In recognition of his service and dedication all are invited to attend a Testmonial Dinner in Honor of National Sons of AMVETS Commander David T. Strittmather.

Veteran Dan Gsell Sr. and member of Post 47 in Panama City Beach, FL is the most recent Veteran to receive mobility assistance through the Sons of AMVETS Department of Florida DIRECT to VET Scooter Program. Dan had a leg amputated, is recovering from a recent stroke, and deals with vison difficulties.

After recent surgeries, Marine Corps Veteran Dale Reed was in need of mobility assistance. On January 31, 2016 the officers of the Department of Florida Sons of AMVETS, and on behalf of the statewide Sons membership presented a mobility scooter to the AMVETS Post 32 member in Lakeland, Florida.

It is with a heavy heart to inform our friends and AMVETS family of the passing of Harold "Lee" Reed. Lee was a true friend of the Sons of AMVETS, serving as National Sons of AMVETS Coordinator and Sons of AMVETS Deptartment of Michigan Coordinator. I am blessed to have shared many memories with Lee over the last few years. We enjoyed the spirited rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State.

THANKS to all Sons for your efforts. Through 03/26/16 we have 171 Squadrons reporting totaling $4,590,792.22 in work and donations. Keep reporting your activity. YOU make a difference as we carryout our mission "Sons Serving Veterans".

To all AMVETS family members and friends,

Reflecting back since the first Sons of AMVETS Squadron was chartered in 1974, I am proud of all this organization has achieved and the veterans it has impacted.

Greetings Members, Officers, and AMVETS Family, I am pleased to announce that we are now in the new office located within the National AMVETS building in Lanham, Maryland. Immediate Past National Commander Dan Briggs and I recently spent 3 days, October 4th though the 7th at the office to assist with arranging furniture, connecting equipment, and organizing.

Department of New York Sons of AMVETS, veteran volunteers, and community organizations were asked to provide assistance as a community service at the 7th Annual Veterans Stand Down on September 25, 2015 at the Northport VA Medical Center. The Northport VAMC sponsored this bi-annual event to help homeless, at risk for homelessness, and Veterans in need of assistance.

On August 8, 2015 Squadron 4, Tampa FL along with the entire AMVETS family of Post 4 presented an Honor and Remember flag to Gold Star mother Kelly Kowall. Son SPC Corey J. Kowall made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan in 2009.
